Background of the Study
Anxiety disorders, characterized by excessive worry, fear, and physiological arousal, are among the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide. Traditional therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy, are often effective, but mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) has emerged as a promising alternative or adjunct. MBT focuses on cultivating present-moment awareness and non-judgmental acceptance of thoughts and feelings, which has been shown to reduce anxiety and enhance emotional regulation (Kaur et al., 2024).
Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State, provides care for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders, but the integration of mindfulness-based therapy into the treatment regimen has not been widely explored in this setting. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of MBT in managing anxiety disorders, considering its potential benefits in reducing anxiety symptoms, improving emotional well-being, and promoting long-term resilience.
Statement of the Problem
Although mindfulness-based therapy has shown promise in treating anxiety disorders in global clinical settings, its application in Nigerian psychiatric institutions remains limited. At Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, patients with anxiety disorders often rely on conventional treatments such as medication, which may have side effects or limited long-term benefits. The absence of research on the effectiveness of MBT in this context hampers its adoption as a mainstream treatment option.
This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness-based therapy for individuals with anxiety disorders, with a focus on improving anxiety symptoms and patient well-being at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro.
